The Bar Colac raise a glass to mateship

The local watering hole joins a state-wide initiative.

A catch-up over a beer has never been more enticing as The Bar Colac join the “Mates Day” state-wide campaign. This Friday 8 May, the Murray Street spot invites friends to come together, connect, have a proper chat, reconnect, and celebrate mateship over a crisp cold one. For the occasion, The Bar will offer half-price schooners of all tap beers, all night.

The annual event, initially designed as a mental health check-in for returned service members, celebrates connection. It’s aimed at combating loneliness by encouraging people to catch up, check in, and support each other at local pubs and community venues. Mates Day, as the name suggests, promotes mateship through social interaction, often featuring charity support and special events in Victoria. In this case, The Bar Colac are bringing friends together through the power of a beer, essentially doing a two for the price of one to share in the joy of togetherness.

The Bar owner Kris Seabert say Mates Day is exactly the kind of event The Bar loves to support, leaning into their ethos of community.

“Everything we do at The Bar is about bringing people together,” Seabert explains. “Mates Day is a great reminder to check in on your friends, make time for each other, and enjoy those simple nights out that can make a big difference.”

It also doubles as a way to help punters get out and about. With the cost of living continuing to put pressure on households, The Bar is hoping the half price schooners will make it easier for people to head out, catch up, and support a local venue.

“We know things are expensive at the moment, and going out can feel like a luxury,” Kris says. “So for Mates Day, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to come down, grab a schooner, spend some time with good people, and check in on their mates”

It’s just one of the incredible events and initiatives ran by The Bar that supports community and bringing people together. The Bar has become a regular gathering place for live music, footy nights, themed events and community celebrations, and Friday night’s Mates Day event continues that focus on creating a welcoming space for locals.

“At the end of the day, it’s not just about the drinks,” Kris said. “It’s about having somewhere people can come together, have a chat, share a laugh, and feel part of the community. That’s what The Bar is all about.”

The Mates Day special will run this Friday night only, with half price schooners available all night at The Bar Colac.
