The Rasmus wear their WEIRDO title as a badge of honour

Finland's biggest rock exports and former Eurovision representative return with their most ambitious album.

The day when The Rasmus infiltrated Australian airwaves is unforgettable. The vampiric 2003 single ‘In The Shadows’ stole our sunlight and welcomed us into a world of darkness, sneaking into the charts on commercial radio. Whilst their shadow has diminished in the ears of our commercial players, The Rasmus have consistently released albums across the last three decades.

Moving into their eleventh album, WEIRDO, the band adds even more definition to their craft. Harping back to their debut, thematically WEIRDO represents the societal outcasts with empowerment anthems. ‘Creatures of Chaos’ sets the tone – driving drums, deadly riffs and euphoric chorus cries. Lauri Ylönen builds delicious harmonies across the ten-track album.

The titular track featuring Lee Jennings brings the best of a ballad-fused belter to the album. The song benefits from the winning big chorus format and an elevated key-change to drive the ‘I’m just a weirdo, I’ll never be a hero’ badge of honour.

A wildcard entry is ‘Love Is A Bitch’ – it’s jarring due to its playful nature, sandwiched into the centre of the album. Alas, it represents the entire album’s ethos.

WEIRDO is full of confidence and character – goth rock at its most ambitious.

The Rasmus release WEIRDO this Friday 12 September. You can presave it here.
