When The Devil Wears Prada guitarist and clean vocalist Jeremy DePoyster prefaced Flowers with “This is us at our peak, in songwriting, in raw and authentic lyricism and introspection, and a desperate attempt to connect with anyone else who feels the same way that we do,” I must admit, the worry started bubbling. Statements like that tend to mean the worst for a band but in this case DePoyster was spot on.

The ninth album to hit TDWP’s shelf, Flowers is a sonic immersion that stretches the band’s ambition and capability, full of the deepest shadows and the most illuminating highlights. A soft land, ‘Where The Flowers Never Grow’ finds beauty in light compositions where melody is a driver – a thread throughout. That’s not to say the brutal edge of the band is forgone – there are heavy drops, sickening screams and a bloody-quaking beat and bass body. ‘So Low’, ‘All Out’, ‘Ritual’, ‘When You’re Gone’ lean heavier and to great effect. Love songs like ‘For You’, and the life contemplative ‘My Paradise’, however, thrive with their gentle nature – showcasing the band’s poetic tapestry.
Flowers only falters with being a super long listen coming in 14 songs strong with a couple of filler instrumental and spoken word tracks.
