At six studio albums in, Boy & Bear find themselves at a place of comfort in their sonic skin. Sure, they started that way with Moonfire and Harlequin Dream setting the tone for their career, defined by melodic hooks, rich storytelling and transcendent tickles of pop. But those albums also profiled them as serious inserts into the music industry.

Tripping Over Time, however, shows a more playful side of the band – one that captures their undeniably effervescent stage presence. The album leans in with their titular number flowing with generous grooves, cheeky hooks, and playful melodies. It’s an invitation into a bright and warm world. ‘Where Does Life Begin’ gets the toes tapping; ‘Ancestors’ is a poetic acoustic-builder; ‘Love Has Been Too Good To Me’ is a gentle embrace; ‘Roses’ is floral with cute clapping and blissful chimes; and ‘Vertigo’ is vibrant with dustings of quirky instrument-based characters who pop in to say hi every so often.
The album’s thematic cohesion is powerful – time, change, growing and nostalgia all framed as adventures to be welcomed. It’s Boy & Bear at their most carefree.
