A new doco on The Angels’ iconic 1983 concert at Narara music festival airs tonight

No pub jukebox worth its salt would be complete without an A to Z collection of The Angels’ legendary hits.

In fact, I’ll wager that no Saturday night in the pubs around Australia would be complete without a unified chorus of ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?’ sang arm in arm, with glasses raised high.

In the brand new live music documentary series, ‘Days Like These…with Diesel’ which brings together some of the most quintessential Australian bands from the past few decades, The Angels will tonight take fans back to one of Australia’s most seminal concerts.

Screening tonight, May 25, episode four of ‘Days Like These With Diesel’ looks to a 1983 concert by The Angels at Narara music festival in rural NSW, as told by band members Rick Brewster, John Brewster and Dave Gleeson.

The Narara Music Festival was an outdoor music festival held on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia in 1983 and 1984. The 1983 concert ran over the Australia Day long weekend, from Friday 28th to Monday 31 January 1983. The event featured an all Australian music bill and comedian Austen Tayshus as M.C.

Between 30,000 and 45,000 people are believed to have attended this concert, with a highlight of the event being The Angels playing with a blood red full moon rising over the stage behind them. They performed 11 songs at the concert, which were released as an album titled “Live at Narara”.

In 1983, The Angels had something to prove. They had just come off a disappointing US tour and lead singer Doc Neeson had announced to his fellow band members that this would be his last gig. For two days, all the top bands in Australia played to a crowd of more than 40,000 fans in a country music festival known as Narara.
