Jesse Valach’s return to music is a triumph of spirit and sound, a celebration of resilience set to the pulse of blues and soul. After a stroke in 2021 threatened to silence him, Valach is preparing to release his new album, Stroke of Luck, on Saturday 25 April, 2026. The record is both a reflection and a revelation, capturing the strength and vulnerability of a man who has faced life-altering adversity and emerged with a renewed voice.
The stroke was a seismic shift that reoriented everything in his life.

“Having a stroke changes everything overnight,” Valach reflects. “One day you’re moving through life without thinking too much about the small things, and the next day you’re learning how to navigate them all again. For me it was a huge moment of perspective.”
In an instant, the familiar became unfamiliar, and the everyday acts of living demanded patience and perseverance. It was a crucible that revealed not only fragility but resilience.
“It showed me something about resilience — that even when things are stripped back, the core of who you are is still there.”
Music became the thread that tethered him back to himself. Where once it had been a craft, it became a lifeline, a conduit for expression and healing.
“It wasn’t just something I did anymore — it became something that helped me reconnect with myself. Music is healing. It carries emotion when words fall short, and blues especially has always been about telling the truth of life — the hardship and the hope. After the stroke, music became a way for me to find my voice again,” he explains.
Through the guitar’s voice, the drum’s pulse, and the unspoken language of song, Valach found his way back to the essence of who he was, each note a reclamation of identity. Stroke of Luck embraces the irony and hope threaded through his recovery. Its title is playful, yet pointed, hinting at the fortune found in survival.

“Having a stroke obviously isn’t lucky, but the ‘luck’ is in what came after — still being here, still having the chance to make music, and still having people around me who supported me through it.”
While the album confronts profound themes, it is far from mournful. The record vibrates with gratitude and energy, balancing reflection with rhythm. It honours struggle but celebrates the joy of being able to create again, a quality that imbues each track with authenticity and heart. The album explores the reverberations of trauma rather than the event itself.
“The stroke itself was one moment in time, but the ripple effect of that moment changes how you see everything afterwards,” Valach says.
Its songs navigate identity, resilience, relationships, and the slow rebuilding of confidence. Music, in this context, becomes a map for rediscovery — an exploration of self through melody and lyric. Recovery, he insists, is not only physical; it is the reclamation of purpose and presence. Stroke of Luck captures this journey in vivid, emotional detail, translating life’s upheaval into art that resonates with honesty and grit. Musically, the album remains anchored in Valach’s blues and soul roots while embracing a slightly heavier, electric edge. He draws on the influence of legends who shaped the genre.
“Artists like Gary Clark Jr., Eric Gales, Lloyd Spiegel, Albert King, Freddie King, Otis Redding, Ray Charles and Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland have all been influences in different ways. They each bring something powerful to the genre — whether that’s raw guitar tone, deep soul, or honest storytelling. At its heart though, the record is about feel. Blues isn’t just about technique — it’s about emotion, honesty and groove.”
The collaboration with The Testaments is integral to the album’s sound. “A blues band only really works when there’s trust and chemistry between the players, and these guys bring that in a big way. They don’t just play behind the songs — they help shape them. Everyone brings their own musical instincts and influences, and that creates a sound that’s bigger than just one person.”
Live, this chemistry comes alive, the interplay between musicians creating a dynamic energy that elevates each song beyond its recorded form, which audiences will see when Valach and The Testaments descend on Barwon Club Hotel. Joining Valach and The Testaments for the launch are Blues Roulette, Iseula, and Justin Yap. This is a night where blues, soul, and the triumph of creativity converge, and where Jesse Valach proves that even in the wake of adversity, music can light the way.
