Located on the Telegraph end of strip shopping street, Pakington Street in Geelong West, King of the Castle is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping destination. The open outdoor to indoor dining area presents ample space for group catch-ups and family outings, with palette booths for intimate seating and long dining tables for larger gatherings.

Owned and operated by Nick and Gemma Watts, the popular café has welcomed new aspects to their experience year after year. Initially focused on coffee and sandwiches, King of the Castle expanded to include an all day dining menu with a key focus on breakfast, lunch and the combined brunch options. Sure, your standard avocado toast and eggs benedict make the cut but their menu takes you on an around the world adventure. Start in England with their Kings Breakfast – 2 poached eggs, local bacon, onion & chives hash brown, house made beans, sliced avocado, thyme and garlic mushrooms, chorizo, and half grilled tomato on sourdough toast – take the Eurostar to France for Churro French Toast, jet across to Asian for some Thai Eggs, dip into the States for a Louisiana Fried Chicken Burger, run further south for the Kings Tostada and Breakfast Tacos, and wrap up with a Maghrebi dish of Kings Shakshuka. Their menu also boasts a large variety of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options along with a generous kids menu packed with favourites including pancakes, scrambled eggs, toasties and a kids portion of avocado on toast.

King of the Castle has a clear local produce focus, with a supplier list the length of an arm including, La Madre Bakery, Keen Eggs, The Healthy Loaf, Sungold, Padre Coffee, Hepburn Springs, Feel Good Foods, Goodalls Meats, P&R Foods and Barwon Valley Small Goods. They also have ties with fellow Pakington pal, Born and Bread Bakehouse. Their counter holds a colourful array of baked goods for either eating on site or take home from slices to muffins and handmade organic raw desserts from Sweet Nectar.

Let’s not forget the most important part of the brunch experience – the coffee! It’s rare that a café holds all of the milk options but King of the Castle pay extra attention to dietary requirements stocking almond milk, oat milk, lactose free milk, soy milk and coconut milk varieties for their range of brews. They also stock cold pressed juices, Karma cold selections, and Remedy Kombucha to get the body ticking. A licensed venue, the beverage offering also includes wines from Oakdene Estate and beers from Blackman’s Brewery.

With the added bonus of a roster of friendly front-of-house and kitchen staff, the Watts has locked onto the right recipe for hospitality in the region. It’s why King of the Castle continues to be a local favourite.
