Expressions of interest are open now for International Women’s day street art commissions

With International Women’s Day 2022 right around the corner, The City of Greater Geelong are looking for female identifying artists to take centerstage.

Artists from all backgrounds including those a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, artists with a disability, First Nations artists and artists from any diverse backgrounds are highly encouraged to send in their expressions of interest for an International Women’s day street art commission project. The artworks being proposed need to be of contemporary artistic intent.

The vibrant commercial zone of Little Malop Street will be home to these artists’ creations. There are also works underway to get Little Ryrie Street as a potential site as well.

Your EOI should include a 500-word professional bio or artist statement, a 2 page CV and a link to your online portfolio. Keep in mind, artists who apply need to be available on these key dates:

This is an amazing opportunity for underrepresented artists to get their foot in the door and showcase their talent. What the panel will be looking for is a high level of sophistication and talent as well as a greater understanding of urban settings. The Greater City of Geelong encourages artists from all backgrounds and techniques to apply. With Little Malop street’s vibrancy being rich with coffee shops, artists and designers, restaurants and wine bars your work will be destined to shine.

International Women’s Day, 8th of March, is a community highlight each and every year. It represents a day of coming together and celebrating femininity in all its forms. This is a day for women to be celebrated for their strengths and recognised for all the work they do. Of course, we think women should be celebrated everyday, but this day signifies a total coming together of the nation as one.

Once shortlisted, artists will be required to respond to sites according to budgets ranging from under $5000 to up to $20,000. Keep in mind, these budgets include the cost of everything including design, materials, freight, sight preparation and installation.

These artworks will brighten the Geelong CBD and speak volumes on the current lack of female identifying artists receiving commissioned works. Some examples of Geelong street artists work can be found here.
