Since their formation in 2012, Sydney alt-rock four-piece CREO has earned their stripes supporting bands including British India, Gung Ho and Glass Towers. Eccentric-pop is what Anna Smyrk and the Appetites are about. And they do it very well. Flashback to 2009 and the band took out honours in the Queenscliff Music Festival Foot-in-the-Door competition. In 2012, Anna and her musical team released their debut album, Belly of Winter. Business became a whole lot busier after that.

When punk legends the Dwarves announced an Australian in tour June, they only announced a wee three dates. Then something happened. Something that can probably be explained with a little research. But I don’t go in for that sort of thing. Anyway, they’re minor details in some big, happy news: the band now has a date in Geelong. That’s right, brothers and sisters, it’s on like Donkey Kong in heat.

Stephen Cummings has been a part of the music world for 40 years. It all began in 1974 with The Pelaco Brothers, a band he shared with Joe Camilleri among others. In 1976 he formed The Sports, a new wave outfit that compiled a very healthy stockpile of releases before disbanding in late 1981.

Bellarine Peninsula based singer/songwriter duo Narelle Jolley and Susan Russell (aka Sweet Delores) formed Ukulele Carnivale in mid 2013. Their signature harmonies and musicianship are a feature of their live performances which take you on a carnival ride of stories about cads, gamblers, circus folk, longing, lost love, country miles and musings of beauty and wonder.

Three million Australians are living with depression or anxiety. It is a heartbreaking figure indeed. It is also something not always understood. We know the fine work beyondblue does in order to combat not only the fallacies around depression and anxiety, but in working to reduce their impact. Next month beyondblue teams up with Lions Club, Music Workshop, Forte and The Barwon Club for The Mane Event, a solid day and night of tunes where entertainment, education and fundraising get an equal billing.

The daughter of a poet father and a music-loving mother, Lucie Thorne grew up in Northern Tasmania. These days she is living across the waters. Flipping through her bio, it states how in her younger days she wanted to be Joni Mitchell. Years later, in a review of her 2011 album Black Across the Field, Readings Monthly compared Thorne to the Canadian songwoman.

And it’s going to be a celebratory night at their little Castlemaine gig as one half of Dead, that would be Jem, is celebrating his day of birth. The other half of Dead is Jace. They formed in 2012 and are “a Voltron-like beast formed from stripped-to-the-bone Karp and Melvins”.
