Adopted as Geelong’s own airport, Avalon Airport sits just on Geelong’s outskirts just off of the M1 with SkyBus, taxi and private transfer access. In and effort to streamline travel, they will launch route 18 in the coming months: the first public bus connecting Lara Station to Avalon seven days a week. This allows for direct access to the station via bus and connecting train services to the airport. With Spirit of Tasmania also connecting Tasmanian traveller to North Shore, the train and bus connection will provide state-visitors alternative opportunities to travel internationally without using Tullamarine.
Their primary airline is Jetstar, with the service adding five return flights per week to Indonesia to their usual service with infrastructure upgrades onsite already underway to allow for the expansion. Avalon is installing 1,000 new seats across terminals, upgrading runway lighting, adding security gear and cameras, connecting water to the control tower, and creating 500 more car parks.
As one of the most popular and affordable international travel destinations for Australian’s this service will ease the toll on Melbourne airport whilst giving west Melbourne, Geelong and surrounds residents easier access to the hotspot. The move further adds to Victoria’s $23 billion economic contribution from the aviation sector which in 2022-23 supported over 138,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
It’s an exciting move for the airline and for Geelong residents.
