The company’s debut feature film, The Last Goal, promises to explore the drama, passion, and cultural richness of Australian Rules Football. Shot predominantly across the City of Greater Geelong, the film intertwines themes of Indigenous-Australian culture, multiculturalism, love, and family, offering more than just a sports story—it aims to be a celebration of Australia itself.
“The Last Goal tells the story of Donny, a mature-age footy prospect, as he navigates love, destiny, and the weight of expectation on the land he calls home,” Todorovic explained. “This story has been with me since I was a child. It’s a way to forgive, reflect, and celebrate the game we all love, while also asking larger questions about destiny and belonging.”
The production has recently launched a fundraiser through the Australian Cultural Fund, inviting Geelong locals and film enthusiasts alike to support this homegrown project. Donations will be used exclusively for production costs, including hiring locations, catering, and paying cast and crew, ensuring a professional debut that honours the craft.
Cinematographer Andrew Petropoulos joins Todorovic in bringing this vision to life, with filming scheduled to begin late 2026 or early 2027. “We need more authentic, uniquely Australian stories,” Todorovic said. “What better way than to support a Geelong boy with big dreams and the determination to see them realised?”
Set against the backdrop of a Grand Final rematch between two cross-town rivals, The Last Goal is described as a sports-drama that is as accessible to non-footy fans as it is to diehard supporters. “The world of footy is a backdrop for bigger questions,” Todorovic notes. “Can we shape our own destiny? How do we belong? I hope audiences feel a sense of community and connection, whether they’ve ever kicked a ball or not.”
With its focus on Australian culture, storytelling, and the power of cinema to unite, Mikey and Co. Productions’ The Last Goal is poised to be a film that resonates far beyond Geelong’s streets, proving that local stories can carry universal appeal.
For those wishing to support the project, contributions can be made via the Australian Cultural Fund, helping ensure that this one-of-a-kind Australian Rules Football sports-drama reaches the big screen.
