The new album, highlighted by the evocative single Life is Beautiful, reflects a journey both literal and spiritual. Following a transformative trip to northern India — from the sacred banks of the Ganges to a contemplative meditation retreat — McSweeney’s songwriting takes on a renewed depth. Mountain Song is at once triumphant and reflective, weaving tales that carry the listener from serene riverside moments to the soaring foothills of the Himalayas, and back again to the quiet humility of home. It is a collection that showcases a songwriter in the confident bloom of his artistry.
“This album is guided by intention. It’s not just about me as a solo artist, or the band, it’s about allowing what I would love to sing and what is the best representation of the music I love. I love performing now like I have never before. Rather than just sit and be entertained, I like the audience to be part of the show, having a shared experience. I want people to feel better when they leave than when they arrived, like I do. A truly transformational experience,” offers McSweeney.
The Wishing Horse, McSweeney’s trusted collaborators over the past two years, bring the album to life with their intuitive musicianship. Michael Ingvarson (BABBA) contributes piano and production, John Fleming (Scared Weird Little Guys) adds guitar textures, Gabriella Favretto lends her voice, long-time collaborator Glen King commands the drums, and Kelly Billingham anchors the ensemble on bass. Together, they navigate McSweeney’s compositions with a subtle, attentive grace. There will also be the addition of a local choir to join the show, making it a very inclusive and participatory event.
Supporting the evening is the talented Phil Smith, adding an intimate prelude to a night that promises music of both heart and horizon.
