Fashion, fibre, and frames: Get ready for a textured art exploration this February

It's almost as if the arts ecosystem in regional Victoria collectively decided to add as much alliteration to this months arts calendar as possible.

Let’s break it down: there’s fashion, fibre, fabrics, frames, facades, and the fluidity of time. This month marks some major moments in art as well with the Paypal Melbourne Fashion Festival making its debut in regional Victoria, a return to the exhibition space for Tim Gresham, and the launch of the 2026 gallery program for Platform Arts.

Explore all of the best arts displays, exhibitions and shows happening this month across regional Victoria.

what it means to remember

When: 20 FEB – 18 APR

Where: Platform Arts, Geelong

what it means to remember brings together artists whose practices engage with memory and place, revealing how such explorations offer layered and diffractive networks that respond to—and at times, remedy—the passage of time. Honouring the fluid nature of time, what it means to remember highlights how artists stretch and compress perception, forging connections between body, memory, and environment. The exhibition features works from Anindita Banerjee, Shivanjani Lal, GANAVYA and more.

Astrid Mulder | Talking Legs

When: 30 JAN – 30 MAR

Where: Alfred Deakin Place, Ballarat Central

The Art Gallery of Ballarat presents the bold and colourful artwork of local artist Astrid Mulder on the Art Screen. Talking legs 2022 is inspired by the sleek visual language of advertising, but its unusual composition also delves into the surreal. Mulder explores the body’s ability to challenge perceptions and reveal new ways of engaging with the world, using gestures and poses to convey complex emotions and narratives.

Interwoven: Fibre Art and Fashion

When: 14 – 28 FEB

Where: National Wool Museum, Geelong

Presented with the Australian Tapestry Workshop, Interwoven: Fibre Art and Fashion celebrates artists in residence working across fashion, textiles, jewellery, photography, and fibre art, exploring creativity through diverse materials. The exhibition runs as part of Geelong Fashion Fortnight for the Paypal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Tim Gresham | Perpetual

When: Until 15 FEB

Where: Ararat Art Gallery TAMA, Ararat

Tim Gresham’s tapestries explore light, colour and rhythm, and are influenced by landscape and modernist design. The time it takes to weave tapestries by hand, and the rhythm of the weaving process are integral to Gresham’s practice. Perpetual is Gresham’s first exhibition in nine years, presenting a series of eight tapestries spanning the last decade.

Framed

When: 2 – 22 FEB

Where: Castlemaine Art Museum, Castlemaine

Framed explores the intimate relationship between artwork and its frame, from ornate 19th-century designs to simple contemporary enclosures. Frames guide the eye, create dialogue, and shape the experience of a work. Featuring Castlemaine’s collection and contemporary pieces, alongside insights from master frame-makers Rob Murdoch and Jill Barclay, this exhibition highlights the frame as both functional and expressive.

Jon Campbell | yEAH/DUNNO

When: Until 28 JUN

Where: Geelong Gallery, Geelong

yEAH/ DUNNO is a striking new commission by contemporary artist Jon Campbell, transforming Geelong Gallery’s rear façade overlooking Johnstone Park. Using words and phrases as imagery, Campbell celebrates suburbia, vernacular, and the humour of everyday language. The five-panel work unfolds with each passerby’s journey, reflecting uncertainty, ambivalence, and the idea that art is woven into the streets, speech, and lives around us.
