Art has never been so bold as it is this month across regional Victoria. You have kaleidoscopic building takeovers to a durational gallery enveloping of community art, pottery, poetry meets oil painting, a reflection of an art movement and dedication to a game-changing arts maker.

It’s all happening this month across Victoria’s most renowned contemporary art galleries, and even some unconventional sites.

SUNNYSIDE

WHEN: 6 – 23 NOV

WHERE: MINING EXCHANGE BUILDING, BALLARAT

Take a walk on the Sunnyside with this vibrant, technicoloured journey. Sunnyside is a bold new art experience transforming Ballarat with colour, creativity, and community. Featuring multi-sensory installations by UK artist Morag Myerscough, workshops, talks and wanderings, it’s a joyful celebration of connection, imagination and artistic expression. The inaugural edition transforms the iconic Mining Exchange with Myerscough’s colour and pattern project, Chasing Sunbeams.

AFTER WALTER HOPPS

WHEN: UNTIL 11 DEC

WHERE; PLATFORM ARTS GEELONG

In its third year, After Walter Hopps sees Platform Arts hand over creative control of their curated gallery program for an open-call exhibition. Taking inspiration from Walter Hopps’ 36 Hours project held in 1978 at the Museum of Temporary Art (MOTA), After Walter Hopps aims to fill the gallery from floor to ceiling, wall to wall, in a community-cumulated, durational and expansive showing. 

THE BETH BROWN AND TOM BRUCE AM GIFT

WHEN: UNTIL 30 NOV

WHERE: GEELONG GALLERY, GEELONG

The Beth Brown and Tom Bruce AM Gift comprises a wide range of ceramics that highlight the history, breadth, and expansive possibilities of modern and contemporary studio pottery. The conscious collection of Brown and Bruce includes the acquisition of over 140 works by 70 Australian and international potters and ceramic artists, including important practitioners such as Stephen Benwell, and Gwyn Hanssen Pigott.

ANNE MIDDLETON – BEYOND FEELING: THE TEXTURE OF TIME

WHEN: UNTIL 1 FEB

WHERE: HORSHAM REGIONAL ART GALLERY

Beyond Feeling: the texture of time surveys the deeply personal and poetic aesthetic of Australian artist Anne Middleton over a period of thirty-five years. This exhibition encompasses oil paintings from the past, informed by her studies of European painting techniques. Alongside recent innovations in her chosen media, this exhibition explores the macrocosm in sublime detail.

THE SCHOOL OF PARIS: AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS ABROAD

WHEN: UNTIL 30 NOV

WHERE: BENDIGO ART GALLERY

Following a three year showing, collection The School of Paris: Australian Artists Abroad is in its final month. The exhibition shows the influence of French and Parisian traditional art practices in Australian artists’ works dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Coined as The School of Paris, this movement saw the immersion of non-French artists in the progressive and lively culture of the Parisian districts.

JXSH MVIR: Forever I Live

WHEN: UNTIL 26 JAN

WHERE: SHEPPARTON ART MUSEUM

JXSH MVIR: Forever I Live reflects on the artistic legacy of late Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, and Barkindji artist Josh Muir (1991-2022), highlighting the strength of Josh’s artistic practice and the important contribution he has made to First People’s art and culture in South East Australia, and contemporary art nationally and internationally over his short yet prolific career.
