Diesel’s “Bootleg Melancholy” is a musical journey that encapsulates the multifaceted genius of the Australian legend. The album boasts 14 tracks of unabashedly exuberant music, making it one of Diesel’s most diverse yet cohesive works to date. Filled with catchy hooks, these songs strike a chord with listeners, exploring themes like family, mortality, childhood, and dreams. The album transcends time and place, offering a unique blend of rousing and reflective pop music that celebrates the beauty of everyday life while facing life’s challenges with deep insights and tenderness.
The album features the hit single “Forever,” which embodies Diesel’s signature soulfulness. “Bootleg Melancholy” offers something for everyone, whether you crave the infectious chorus of a pop anthem, the comfort of heartfelt lyrics, or the thrill of Diesel’s exhilarating guitar solos.
Reflecting on the album, Diesel commented, “After recording and releasing two albums in a pandemic, it feels great to be releasing this new album! I’m not sure what normal is, but it feels great to be still doing this with others around me.”
The pandemic years led Diesel to explore the sounds of artists like TLC, Elliot Smith, Leon Bridges, Khruangbin, and Angel Olsen, and to dive deep into the guitar sounds of the first three Prince albums. He recorded, mixed, and mastered “Bootleg Melancholy” entirely on his own, with the occasional collaboration with drummer Lee Moloney and saxophonist Bernie Bremond. The album serves as a cathartic journey through Diesel’s personal experiences, reflecting on the places he’s been and the memories he holds dear.
Diesel describes the album as “almost a travel log recall of all the places I’ve been or lived in.” He continues, “There are also a lot of bright-sounding songs with quite close-to-the-bone lyrics, I like to have that juxtaposition.”
Bootleg Melancholy is slated for release on Friday, 13 October via Bloodlines, and pre-orders are available now. Tickets available to the general public from Thursday, 26 October at 9 am. Find out more here.
